Islamabad: Opposition parties have agreed to establish a joint opposition front in Parliament, with Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman criticizing the government’s approach to political dialogue and the country’s broader situation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A meeting of opposition leaders was held at Maulana Fazlur Rehman’s residence in Islamabad. The meeting was attended by Opposition Leader Mahmood Khan Achakzai, Allama Raja Nasir Abbas, Asad Qaiser, Junaid Akbar and PTI leader Salman Akram Raja.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
JUI-F leaders including Maulana Abdul Ghafoor Haideri, Kamran Murtaza, Maulana Abdul Wasay and Engineer Ziaur Rehman also participated in the meeting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Speaking to the media after the meeting, Fazlur Rehman responded to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s call for dialogue with the opposition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe prime minister says, \u2018Come, let\u2019s talk,\u2019\u201d Fazlur Rehman said. \u201cBut a clap requires two hands; here there is one hand that is slapping the nation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The JUI-F chief said that people across the country feel insecure and accused the government of providing assurances instead of addressing the problems facing citizens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He said that people had been hearing assurances for approximately two decades, but the situation had not improved. He also linked the country’s political and security situation to economic difficulties, arguing that continued instability was having a negative impact on the economy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Fazlur Rehman questioned how long the opposition and the public could remain silent and how long political considerations could prevent decisive action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He also rejected what he described as the government’s narrative about the country’s situation, saying that the official position did not accurately reflect the realities on the ground.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Criticism of New Provinces Debate<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Fazlur Rehman also criticized the ongoing discussion about the creation of new provinces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He questioned why such proposals were being raised at a time when, in his view, the country was already facing serious challenges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Using the metaphor of a house on fire, he said that it was inappropriate to discuss dividing the house while the fire was still burning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
His comments reflected his position that addressing security, political and economic problems should take priority over debates about creating new administrative units.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Joint Opposition in Parliament<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Following the meeting, Fazlur Rehman announced that the opposition parties had agreed in principle to form a joint opposition in Parliament.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He said the purpose of the alliance would be to enable opposition parties to take more effective and coordinated action inside Parliament.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The opposition also agreed to present its collective position directly to the people, suggesting that the alliance could coordinate its public messaging as well as its parliamentary activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The proposed arrangement could bring together opposition groups that have different political backgrounds but share concerns about the government’s policies and the country’s political direction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Salman Akram Raja’s Response<\/p>\n\n\n\n
PTI leader Salman Akram Raja also spoke following the meeting and endorsed Fazlur Rehman’s criticism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Referring to Fazlur Rehman’s \u201cslap\u201d metaphor, Raja said that the slap was being felt across the faces of everyone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He described the government’s approach as harmful to the country and stressed the need for political forces to move forward while taking the entire nation along.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Raja’s participation in the meeting is significant because the PTI has been at the center of Pakistan’s ongoing political tensions, while other opposition parties have also been seeking greater coordination in Parliament.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Political Significance<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The agreement to establish a joint opposition front could give opposition parties a more coordinated platform inside Parliament. Rather than pursuing separate positions on every issue, the parties could potentially formulate common strategies on political, economic and security matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
However, the details of the proposed alliance\u2014including its formal structure, leadership and decision-making mechanism\u2014have not yet been fully announced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
