Turkey, Pakistan and Saudi Arabia will group senior ministers, hold \u200cjoint exercises and deepen defence industry cooperation under Makkah Joint Defence Agreement signed between the regional powers last week, Turkey’s defence ministry said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The three states, alarmed by \u200ba regional conflagration that has brought Iranian missile fire onto Gulf \u200boil exporters, signed the defence accord on August 7. They \u2060said the accord stipulates that an armed attack against any member would be \u200bregarded as an attack on all, similar to NATO’s Article 5 collective defence clause.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
At a \u200bweekly briefing in Ankara, the defence ministry said the pact’s fundamental goal was to ensure defence and military ties were put on a “more institutional and sustainable” footing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Under the accord, strategic political \u200band military mechanisms plan to be established involving the defence ministers, foreign ministers, \u200band chiefs of general staff\/armed forces commanders, and that coordination among the three countries will \u200cbe conducted \u2060at the highest level,” it said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The ministry added that joint military exercises involving land, naval, and air forces, as well as air defence and unmanned systems were planned, in addition to deeper defence industry cooperation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“The aim is to provide not \u200bonly product and system \u200bsupply, but also \u2060joint development and production, technology cooperation, and sustainable maintenance and logistics support,” it said, adding that unmanned and autonomous systems, \u200belectronic warfare and artificial intelligence capabilities would be prioritised.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Turkey, which \u200bhas NATO’s \u2060second-largest army, has said the pact with nuclear-armed Pakistan and top oil exporter Saudi Arabia was open to expansion \u2014 with Egypt as a potential candidate \u2014 and did not \u2060seek \u200bto replace any existing alliances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The ministry also said \u200bTurkey was participating in meetings in Jeddah aimed at establishing an international coalition to protect Red Sea shipping.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Turkish Defence Ministry spokesman Rear Admiral Zeki Akturk told reporters that the agreement aims to create more spaces for military cooperation, including training together to practise joint operations and working together on advanced military technology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe aim is to begin with command-post and field exercises and, at later stages, conduct joint exercises involving land, naval, air, air defence and unmanned systems,\u201d Akturk explained, according to the Turkish state outlet Anadolu Agency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The spokesman noted the three countries had already come to some bilateral agreements to work together, but the new agreement streamlines these prior deals.
