A total eclipse will be observed in western Spain and Iceland, with the total phase near Iceland expected to last approximately 2 minutes and 18 seconds.

The eclipse will also be visible in a partial form across several European countries. Madrid and Barcelona are expected to experience around 99 percent coverage, while Paris will witness approximately 92 percent, London 91 percent and Berlin 85 percent coverage.

Parts of Africa, Canada and the United States will also experience a partial solar eclipse.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department said the solar eclipse will begin at 8:34pm Pakistan Standard Time and reach its maximum phase at 10:46pm. The eclipse will completely end at 12:58am.

However, the eclipse will not be visible from Pakistan because the relevant phases will occur during nighttime in the country.

The meteorological department also said that a partial lunar eclipse is expected on August 28, but that event will likewise not be visible from Pakistan.

Solar eclipses occur when the Moon passes between the Earth and the Sun, temporarily blocking some or all of the Sun’s light from reaching certain parts of the Earth. A total solar eclipse occurs only along a relatively narrow path where the Moon completely covers the visible disk of the Sun.

The August 12 eclipse is therefore expected to attract significant attention from astronomers, researchers and skywatchers, particularly in areas where totality can be observed. Observers in locations experiencing the eclipse are advised to use certified solar viewing equipment and never look directly at the Sun without appropriate protection.

The second solar eclipse of 2026 will take place today, August 12, with parts of Europe set to witness a rare total solar eclipse.
