ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Monday said the trilateral defence agreement<\/a> signed by Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Turkiye was aimed at promoting peace, security and prosperity in the region and was not directed against any country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Addressing a meeting of the federal cabinet, the prime minister said the agreement represented a continuation of the existing cooperation among the three countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said Pakistan and Saudi Arabia had also signed a defence agreement last year, while Pakistan and Turkiye had maintained defence and strategic cooperation for decades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis agreement is for peace, security and prosperity in the region,\u201d the prime minister said, stressing that the trilateral arrangement should be viewed in the context of longstanding cooperation among the three countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shehbaz said the agreement was not intended as an act of aggression against any country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe trilateral defence agreement is not aggression against anyone,\u201d he said, describing it as a source of strength for the Muslim Ummah.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The prime minister congratulated Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar and Chief of Defence Forces Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir on the agreement, saying efforts to finalise the arrangement had been under way for several years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He praised the efforts of the two officials in helping bring the negotiations to fruition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Protection of holy sites<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

The prime minister said the protection of the Haramain Sharifain held particular significance for the people and armed forces of Pakistan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He described the responsibility of protecting the holy sites as an important duty for Pakistan and its armed forces, highlighting the special relationship between Pakistan and Saudi Arabia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shehbaz said the new agreement should be seen as part of the broader strategic and defence cooperation that already exists between the three countries rather than as a new arrangement created in isolation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Turkiye have maintained close political, economic and defence ties, with Islamabad and Ankara in particular having longstanding military cooperation and defence industry links.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

PM reiterates commitment to eliminate terrorism<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

The prime minister also used the cabinet meeting to reiterate the government\u2019s resolve to eliminate terrorism from the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said security forces were continuing operations against what he referred to as Fitna al-Khawarij and expressed confidence that Pakistan would eventually be free of terrorism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOne day, the country will be free of terrorism,\u201d Shehbaz said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Paying tribute to security personnel killed in recent attacks, he recalled the sacrifices made by personnel in Hangu, Swat and other parts of the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He specifically paid tribute to Major Hafiz Ehsan Elahi, Captain Hamza Akram and Deputy Superintendent of Police Diyar Khan, along with other personnel who had lost their lives in the fight against terrorism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOur sacrifices in the war against terrorism will not go to waste,\u201d the prime minister said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said the nation would continue its efforts to defeat militant elements and expressed the hope that Pakistan would once again become free from terrorism and move towards peace, stability and development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shehbaz said security forces were conducting operations against Fitna al-Khawarij around the clock.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The prime minister\u2019s remarks came as Pakistan simultaneously faces the continuing challenge of militant violence at home and seeks stronger regional cooperation on security and economic issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said Pakistan\u2019s armed forces and security institutions would continue their fight against terrorism while the government pursued policies aimed at promoting peace, stability and development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

PML-N victory in AJK elections<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

The prime minister also spoke about the Azad Jammu and Kashmir elections, saying the people of AJK had voted for the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said the party had secured a majority in the elections and that the results from the first two phases had reflected public support for the PML-N.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to Shehbaz, the AJK results represented an expression of confidence in the leadership of PML-N President Nawaz Sharif.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He thanked the people of Azad Kashmir for expressing confidence in the party and said the PML-N government would begin a new phase of development and public service in the territory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe results are an expression of confidence in Nawaz Sharif\u2019s leadership,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shehbaz said the party would focus on development in Azad Kashmir and work to resolve the problems faced by its people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The prime minister also criticised attempts by certain elements to create disorder in Azad Kashmir.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said no civilised society could allow lawlessness and stressed that problems should be resolved through dialogue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSolutions to problems are found through dialogue,\u201d Shehbaz said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He alleged that certain elements had deliberately attempted to disrupt the situation in Azad Kashmir and warned that the government would not allow anyone to create unrest or anarchy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said maintaining peace and ensuring respect for law were essential for the political and economic development of the region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The prime minister\u2019s remarks came amid political tensions surrounding the AJK electoral process, with the government maintaining that the elections had provided the people with an opportunity to exercise their democratic right.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
