Meta-owned WhatsApp is moving closer to launching a much-anticipated username feature, allowing users to communicate without sharing their phone numbers. This privacy-focused upgrade has been in development since May 2023, and recent beta updates show that progress is accelerating.
According to a new report from WABetaInfo, WhatsApp has begun rolling out the “username reservation system” for Android beta testers. The system will let users reserve a unique username for their account — similar to how handles work on Instagram or Telegram — enabling others to find and message them using the username instead of their phone number.
While the company has not yet announced an official launch date, the latest beta version reveals an early glimpse of how the feature may function. Within the account settings, a new option will allow users to choose and reserve their preferred username, provided it’s available. Once registered, the username will be linked to their WhatsApp ID and visible in future updates.
The feature is currently in its testing phase, and only a limited number of beta users can see or interact with the option. WhatsApp developers are reportedly enhancing the backend system to ensure secure verification and to prevent duplication or misuse of usernames.
Experts believe the introduction of usernames will significantly enhance user privacy, allowing safer interaction with businesses and individuals without exposing personal numbers.
Once finalized, this update could mark one of WhatsApp’s most important privacy improvements in years, giving users more control over their identity and communication.
