Islamabad: The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has decided to initiate strict action against individuals showcasing their wealth on social media platforms.
According to reliable sources, the tax authority has compiled extensive data on hundreds of thousands of users who display lavish lifestyles online. In the first phase, FBR will audit around 100,000 high-net-worth individuals suspected of tax evasion or underreporting.
Lavish Weddings and Extravagant Displays Under Scrutiny
Officials revealed that non-filers who spend extravagantly on weddings will also come under the radar. For example, individuals purchasing $20,000 designer suits or showcasing expensive jewelry, luxury cars, and sprawling mansions online will be asked to explain the legitimate sources of their income.
Matching Wealth with Income Records
The FBR has developed a system to cross-check wealth flaunted on social media with official tax returns. Authorities will compare the income declarations submitted last year with current financial activities to identify discrepancies.
By targeting this category of tax evasion, the FBR hopes not only to boost revenue collection but also to discourage the culture of ostentatious spending that often promotes inequality.
This move is part of Pakistan’s broader strategy to expand the tax net and ensure that wealthy individuals contribute their fair share.
